This process is carried out by re heating the parts to between 200˚c and 720˚c to obtain the strength required to meet customer specification.
This is carried out during the hardening process by ensuring the furnace atmosphere carbon content is at a level to restore carbon in the material being processed.
This again is carried out during the hardening process by ensuring the furnace atmosphere carbon content is in excess of the carbon content of the parts resulting in a hard wearing surface layer much harder than the core of the parts. The depth of this layer is determined by the time parts are exposed to the furnace atmosphere.
As case hardening with the addition of ammonia gas which at hardening temperatures cracks into nitrogen and hydrogen. The nitrogen is in a form which penetrates the surface of the parts greatly increasing the hardness of the surface of the case.
This is carried out by heating the parts to a pre-determined temperature below 720˚c without protective atmosphere and allowed to cool in air.
